The idle lips that should have kissed...
I feel like I talk about Some Kind of Wonderful a lot. But heck! I'm doing it again.

SKOW

Can we talk for a moment about how beautiful they are? Can we please? Because I think they're very beautiful.

I don't even know why this film sticks with me so hard. I mean, it has so many of the things that I love, tomboys with short hair who can't admit that they don't have everything sorted out, best friends who fall in love, ERIC STOLTZ! So obviously I was always going to love it (sidebar: when I was a kid Eric Stoltz as he was in Little Women really used to creep me out, I don't know when I fell in love with him).

But there is something magical about this film that I really cannot pinpoint, I think it probably just has to do with the fact that these are two incredibly talented and serious actors who took their job seriously and did it really freaking well. That's probably it, right? That and that they're both just really insanely beautiful.

I can't even with this picture, it's like everything I wanted it to be before I even knew I wanted it! She's so casual and impish and he's so serene and they both just look completely comfortable and friendly and I know they're actors and can pretend to be those things but I want to believe that they are honestly like this with each other. I don't know why it's so important to me that people I love watching together on screen get on well. It really doesn't matter, except that it DOES! I want them to have formed some kind of lasting bond, for this film to have had the same impact on them, the creators, as it did on me, the audience. It's a weird thing that I have. I'm ridiculous. But I love them! *Happy sigh*

And by the way, yes, this is the week where I babble incoherently about stuff and then post without reading back, sorry about that...

That picture slays me. Slays me, I say! And believe unconditionally that it could be Keith and Watts grown up. :D

There's something about SKoW that is so wonderfully magic, but also real, more believable than other John Hughes movies from that period. I've always appreciated that as much as I wanted Watts to get the boy in the end, I never hated Lea Thompson's character. (ok, the Rolling Stones song probably helped :) She was working just as Keith to fit in. I wanted her to learn from Watts just as much.

Plus, detention. Art. Girl drummer!

And OMG, the kiss! The kiss that all other kisses are judged by. When I was in college is was generally accepted that if you couldn't imagine kissing someone as the other half of that kiss, you simply could not kiss+ them. full stop.

Right? I am literally destroyed by its brilliance. And you're right! It absolutely IS them as grown ups, maybe that's why I find it so attractive!

The authenticity of the characters is definitely one of the things that I love the most about the movie, how honest their issues are, and how none of them really are just any one thing. And Amanda was a whole person with her own problems and her own self-image issues, she's not just there as a rival to Watts. Which is definitely refreshing when it comes, not only to teen dramas but romantic comedies in a general sense.

What? You mean...THE KISS THIS KISS?

That is the rule for all of life. I refuse to kiss anyone unless they will kiss me like this. True story. Sigh.

That's the kiss right there!

That's a beautiful picture of the two of them. If there are other good pictures, I might have to pick that issue up.

It looked like a pretty cool issue, there's a Clueless reunion and ET as well. I would get it, were I not in a whole other country :(

You have to consider...
...if you can deliver the kiss that kills." <3 <3 <3

I could talk about this movie all day. It is my favorite of all the teen movies (maybe with the exception of Heathers, depends on the day). It's definitely my favorite romantic comedy. We already know I am a Watts fan and she has predestined many of my favorite fictional ladies of all time with her complete and total awesomeness.

(One of the ideas for an original novel possibly/maybe/not quite sure simmering in the back of my head is some kind of adaptation of this for an adult romance. Maybe. I have no idea WHAT OR HOW but maybe.)

Also look at this picture I found today of British mystery author Zoe Sharp (who apparently writes a series featuring a bad-ass lady too). IS IT NOT WATTS ALL GROWN UP?!
I saw it and was like I have to show this to HCH!!

HA!But I digresss!

Also Watts had fingerless red leather FRINGED gloves.

Also she played dice with the busboys and said shit like "Mess with the bull and you're gonna get the horns!"

ALSO: aside from the insane chemistry in that kissing scene--which I think suckerpunches you because you kind of don't expect it because she and Keith have been so platonic otherwise but then his big dirty hand clenches on her back pocket and her legs lock around his waist and there's this little pause after their lips first meet and then they GO BACK TO KISSING and Whoooooo!--they have that excellent scene where they lay down on her bed and she rests against his bicep! And she makes a dramatic stand all "I'd bet my hands on it!" Sigh. Sigh. And their banter! <33333333333333333 And she threatens to shove a drumstick up that girl's nose!!

I think Watts is one of the few authentic female tomboys with a smart mouth that we ever see in romantic comedies. I literally can't think of another one. I think she's why I loved Joey Potter in S1 of Dawson's Creek so much.

Alternately I loved Lea Thompson's Amanda too. It was a stroke of genius to make her not just the pretty rich girl, but actually girl from their side of town who'd made good and who actually landed on her feet at the end with self-respect and dignity. You didn't have to choose between Amanda and Watts because they both came out triumphant (and respecting each other too!). That's really nice. It wasn't lazy and trite, where one leg of triangle was proven to be not worthy, you know?

I was reading some thread just the other day where people were (blasphemy!) saying they doubted Keith and Watts were well-suited and that Watts should have ended up with Duncan (who was awesome too, but still!) But they have my favorite thing with soulmatey couples--opposite on the surface, but twin souls who understand and complement each other beneath it. SIGH. <3 <3

(Boo! I cannot find my SKOW icons at the moment. Kara will have to do.

Amanda Jones is no minor league-r who'll be swept off her feet at the touch of your amateur lips...
I LOVE HOW LONG YOUR COMMENT IS. <3 I'm so glad there are people willing to talk to me about this :D

Oh my god that picture! She definitely is a Watts fan. I've actually never heard of her as an author, I'll have to check see if we have any in the shop.

"ALSO: aside from the insane chemistry in that kissing scene--which I think suckerpunches you because you kind of don't expect it because she and Keith have been so platonic otherwise but then his big dirty hand clenches on her back pocket and her legs lock around his waist and there's this little pause after their lips first meet and then they GO BACK TO KISSING and Whoooooo!--they have that excellent scene where they lay down on her bed and she rests against his bicep! THIS. All of this. It's the clenching hand that gets me, every single time. I'm watching it, it's all nice and lovely and I'm all YAY they're kissing, and then his hand grasps and my heart stops. It's sooooo good. That and the way that he's fully leaning her backward by the time she freaks out, like he completely intends to press her back into the table and never ever stop kissing her. And then his cheeks are all pink and he's all "y-y-you're pretty", and good grief it just knocks me out. ♥

Part of what I love so much about it too is definitely the fact that you never have to dislike Amanda Jones in order to love Watts, they're both equally flawed and equally attractive. I think Amanda is such an interesting character, fighting for her place in the hierarchy and realising along the way that she doesn't necessarily like herself. The issues they address in this movie are so very much real teen stuff, it's not about falling in love and being happy for the rest of your life so much as it is about finding out who you are.

And I absolutely love that the two of them shake hands at the end, they're never fighting over Keith, the respect is so important to me in why I love both of them.

I think it's marvelous.

(By the way, I would totally be squeeing to high heaven about your potential idea for an adult adaptation, but I don't want to put any pressure on you or your creative process! EEEEEEEEEE!!! <3)

"If this is how you repay a favor, I don't know if I'm rich enough to be your friend."
ALWAYS <3 <3 <3

Hee, right? SHE MUST BE. Her series which I've only just heard about over here sounds awesome. The heroine is former military special ops turned bodyguard!! I'm going to check her out soon!

That clenching hand is just whooooa. And yeah he's totally bending her back when she pushes him away...and ***MELTS***

Yes, I agree with Amanda & Watts. Although to be fair, Amanda barely knows she exists. And they do have that little squealing breaks & lipstick/kicking the seat bit, but thankfully it's very brief.

I have no idea how to make it work as an adult thing but...they kind of have similar issues to K/L (well Keith and Lee both have daddy issues anyway) and they're adults...so...maybe? It's only the merest of whims at the moment though.
